Know the Teachers

Kasia & Mateusz

Kasia Kamińska and Mateusz Kamiński discovered blues in 2018 and immediately fell in love with the dance. They find blues to be one of the most beautiful musical genres of all time, and it moves them both in a profound way.

Mateusz has a movement background — before dancing, he trained parkour, running and martial arts. He has been fascinated with hip hop culture from an early age, which now strongly influences his understanding of dancing as a form of cultural expression.

Kasia discovered the magic of movement later in life, qualified as a yoga teacher, and explored various movement forms. Having graduated from linguistic studies and now working as a jewelry designer, she sees blues both as a language — a way of communication and self-expression — and as an art form.

Together, they love exploring different dances under the blues umbrella and focus on culture, history and Black American values in their dancing journey. They build their dance around deep connection — with music, with the floor (grounding!) and with a partner — while simultaneously embracing individual expression, shapefullness and play.

They have been sharing their blues journey with the local Warsaw community for nearly four years, and in the last year they began gaining international experience. They are also still learning and researching, and don’t plan to stop. Living in Warsaw and being cultural outsiders, they are aware that they need to dig deep in order to stay in the process of finding out what blues actually has been. And the deeper they scratch, the deeper it goes — so they keep on scratching, learning and exploring.

Class Information

During this workshop we will explore some exciting topics:

  • Close Embrace Deep Dive: We consider close embrace core to blues. It helps establish deep and meaningful connection between partners. Starting the dance in close embrace, lingering there, and taking time to focus and feel the music together is a great way to build foundation for the entire dance. In this class we will focus on technical elements needed to create embrace that feels easy, comfortable and pleasant, like a friendly, warm hug.

  • Slow Drag: Slow Drag is considered the oldest couple dance done to blues music. Sources suggest that it was mostly danced on the spot, in close embrace. In the first part of the class, we will explore basic “step and drag” to a variety of music. From there we will focus on musical choices that can be led and therefore shared, as well as musical expressions that can be executed independently, as individual choices. Although simple and modest from an observer’s point of view, Slow Drag creates enormous scope for individual expression.

  • Stride: Stride is one of the blues dances falling under the ballroomin’ umbrella. It was danced in ballrooms, traveling in the line of dance. It involves long steps executed with a lot of power — drive. One of its characteristics is constant leg connection between partners. In this class we will briefly cover line of dance principles and from there dive deep into the foundations of Stride.

  • Grounding: Quality connection with the ground is one of the fundamental characteristics of blues aesthetics. In this class, we will explore ways to root ourselves deep in the ground, draw energy from it and generate movement working with the ground - both in solo and in partnership. Through a variety of exercises, we will experience the difference between creating movement with strong support from the ground and without it, so you can clearly feel the difference in your own body.

  • Shapefulness: Asymmetry is one of core blues aesthetics. Broken lines, curves and angles are valued much more than straight perfect lines. In this class, we will work on it by creating various shapes both within our bodies as well as in partnership. Exploring shapes is a fun way to make each dance unique and to develop your individual style. You will be given tools to shape your body safely and you will be encouraged to explore your own unique ways.

  • Playfulness: During the final class of the weekend, we will focus on play. Individual expression is yet another important characteristics of Black American dances. Each of us has their own musical expression and uncovering it can be deeply rewarding. In this class we will focus on finding our individual voice of expressing the music and practice ways of doing it independently within partnership. We will free both body and mind, using creativity to inspire each other and build unique, joyful dances!
